The Fifth Toy Story Film Trailer Pits The Beloved Duo Against a Tablet Computer

It has been 30 anniversary since the first Toy Story film was released, launching the animation giant as a major animation studio and bringing audiences to beloved characters like Woody (the actor) and Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen), who are now household names.

Coming in 2026, the next chapter is set to arrive. The initial preview for Toy Story 5 appeared this week, providing a glimpse into the plot but leaving viewers curious how it will resolve the ending of Toy Story 4.

Bonnie's New Toy: A Digital Device Spooks the Gang

The preview shows the young girl — who inherited the toy collection when he grew up — getting a brand new toy, one that terrifies the familiar toy group. She acquires her first tablet computer, and she is excited about it.

Theoretically, the amphibian-inspired device will come to life just like Bonnie's other toys. Still, the characters appear to consider it as a threat intending to supplant them, which it likely will.

The Cowboy's Comeback: Unanswered Questions from Toy Story 4

One thing the trailer doesn't touch on is why Woody is returned with his companions in the child's bedroom. The finale of Toy Story 4 saw him set off on a new adventure with Bo Peep (Annie Potts), traveling with a fair and assisting giveaway items find good homes.

Surely, the filmmakers will address the aftermath of Toy Story 4 in the movie. Witnessing him show up in the familiar setting without warning is somewhat puzzling, however. It also raises questions whether his partner will have come back with Woody. And what about Duke Caboom (Keanu Reeves)?

Connections from the Previous Film

Fortunately, some elements are carrying over from the prior film. The last thing the cowboy did before setting off for his new life was hand over his symbol of authority to Jessie (the voice actor), leaving her in charge of Bonnie's bedroom. The clip shows the badge attached to her shirt.

Hopefully she is remains the driving force among the toys.

Toy Story 5 debuts on the scheduled date.
