The Global Health Body Issues Alert Over Acute Lack of Weight-Loss Medications

Less than one in 10 individuals who could benefit from obesity jabs like Wegovy can access them, warns the World Health Organization as it issues its inaugural guidance on the drugs.

With over a billion individuals worldwide currently obese, it is urging broader and more equitable access to GLP-1 medication.

According to estimates, in excess of 2,000,000,000 could be living with obesity by 2030 unless action is taken.

"The latest guidelines affirms that excess weight is a long-term condition that can be addressed with thorough and lifelong support," remarked WHO director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

Substantial prices, insufficient output, and supply-chain constraints are major barriers to broad availability to the injections that can aid individuals in losing significant body mass, says the organization.

Despite the current most optimistic outlook, the manufacturing of these medications could only cover approximately 100 million people – under 10% of eligible patients, according to the health organization.

The guideline urges countries and companies to increase availability, through measures such as voluntary licensing.

Exclusive production rights on the active ingredient – the core component of Novo Nordisk's Wegovy – is set to lapse in multiple nations in 2026.

These medications mimick a biological compound to slow digestion, suppress the appetite and boost satiety so individuals consume fewer calories.

Individuals usually start to lose weight after several weeks of beginning the weekly injections.
