"When are you interviewing the Haim sisters?" a message arrives. "I was hoping to ask if I can become their newest bandmate."

There's just a key snag: The sender also desires to be Haim's additional sibling. And we're in plentiful company. Several high-profile supporters have also begged for the honor.

The evidence suggests an irresistible appeal is happening. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana started their career doing sets at neighborhood delis with their family. Now they're multi-time Grammy contenders.

In the tradition of the best groups, they're a tight-knit gang. Their music videos often feature them striding in unison down the streets of Los Angeles. In concert, they jam with such pure joy you inevitably think, "I want to be involved in that, too."

"How often on tour that fans came up to us and said, 'Seeing you perform, I got a bass'," states Alana, the most junior of the trio. "That is the greatest compliment. That is recognition in itself. We have succeeded if we can motivate people to start a band."

"Therefore anyone are welcome to be the fourth part of the family."

Historic Nod

The band have called into their homes, where they're resting up after an lengthy tour in for their new album, I Quit.

They're currently celebrating the news it's been shortlisted for Best Rock Album at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the pioneering all-female band ever in contention for the prize.

"I tune into the lists every year, so it kind of feels like The Truman Show when your name is called," explains Alana. "I needed to phone my sisters to say, 'Did we just hear this right or am I dreaming'?"

The significance of the accolade isn't lost on the band.

"We truly set out to make a rock record this time, so it's a major milestone," adds Alana. "Yet we're just thankful for the pioneers that paved the way."

Emotional Upheaval and Humour

The album emerged from a time of emotional upheaval. All three sisters were single, and the music explores that odd liminal space where you're relieved to be free, but not quite ready to start anew.

The words follow departures and goodbyes. The sisters desire love, but not the kind of love they've had. You can hear them determining in real life who they are becoming.

"I love way of putting it, yes," says Danielle. "I Quit is like a mantra. You have to actively work on shutting out the criticism and saying, 'It doesn't matter to me what people think'."

Refinement of Style

That recent confidence required a fresh approach – more organic and direct than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who co-produced the album, that was founded on the drums.

"Percussion is such a detailed thing, and I focus so intensely about it," she says.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the name of our memoir," laughs Alana. "Our motto is, our albums cannot begin until we find the perfect drum sound."

Anecdotes and Shared Laughter

The band's candor shaped the album's promotional campaign, where the sisters disclosed some of their personal tales.

One man left Este over a health concern. Alana recalled a story of flying to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a friendly slap at midnight.

"During these heartbreaks, you just feel like there's no light," says Alana. "So to be able to find humor in those stories and hear others tell you more outrageous stories, it's therapeutic."

An Assured Future

One can easily sense a change in the band. Now, Haim are more certain of their standing in the industry.

They're top-billed acts, with successful albums and an global fan base.

However Haim will forever be their number one commitment.

"We have been playing music since I was little," says Alana. "It feels as if no alternative that we were destined for. And I'm really thankful we've reached this point and we're still kicking."
