The Tottenham defender scored on two occasions as Tottenham extended their winning streak on the road in the top division and handed Everton their first defeat at their new home.

Everton were undefeated in their last five matches at their new ground at Bramley-Moore Dock, having departed Goodison Park behind after more than a century at the end of last season.

But Spurs captain Van de Ven pounced twice from set-pieces in the first half to put their impressive record at risk, and they were failed to mount a comeback before Pape Matar Sarr - set up by former Toffees attacker the Brazilian - headed home a third to seal the victory.

Jake O'Brien believed he had levelled the tally a short while after Van de Ven's first goal, directing a powerful header past the Spurs keeper from an Everton corner.

Beto, in the meantime, failed to convert a number of chances, while the Italian goalkeeper made a succession of fine stops to ensure the London club went five away games without defeat in the Premier League.

But the video assistant referee intervened, advising the match official to review the goal on the pitchside monitor and the referee decided that Jack Grealish and Iliman Ndiaye were in offside positions and had impeded with the Spurs keeper.

The win elevates the manager's team into third place in the division, five points off local foes and leaders the Gunners.

Everton stay in 14th position and are six points clear of the drop zone.

Tottenham analysis: Van de Ven fulfils duties at both ends of the field

Following a drab weekday performance in the Champions League against the French side, where they mustered a only two shots on goal, Frank opted for the French striker up front instead of ex-Everton forward Richarlison.

The summer signing was unable to make much of an impact before being substituted for Richarlison after 60 minutes on the pitch, but it emerged he wasn't needed in the end.

Defender the Dutchman transformed into an offensive threat to be reckoned with.

Tottenham's first goal came from a well-worked corner routine, with Rodrigo Bentancur heading the ball toward the six-yard box for an unmarked the defender to head home.

And Ven de Ven - filling in as skipper in Cristian Romero's unavailability - added his second in first-half stoppage time as he rose above Jordan Pickford to head home.

The Dutchman was equally outstanding in defensive duties, partnering well with his defensive colleague as the pair dealt excellently with the numerous deliveries sent their way by Everton.

Everton analysis: Toffees lacking striker's instinct

Everton's new home had been a happy hunting ground, but it seems the freshness may have faded slightly and fans headed to the exits after Sarr's final goal for Spurs.

The end in Everton's winning streak at home will not be a major worry for David Moyes, but their striker situation are.

Beto and Thierno Barry - the Everton's two established centre-forwards - had netted only a single goal between them before Sunday's outing.

And they were unable to add to that miserable tally on a damp and dreary evening on in Liverpool.

Beto's performance was summed up when he opted to bicycle-kick a golden opportunity from near the goal, despite having space and opportunity to reposition for a more conventional shot that would have challenged the keeper.

The substitute, as well, was unable to make an impact after replacing the starter in the second half.

It wasn't for a shortage of opportunity. The majority of Everton's offensive moves came through the winger and the forward, who tirelessly delivered dangerous crosses into the Spurs box.
